Records for New England Butt Co. include act of incorporation (printed), 1853, with amendments, 1892, 1940, 1947; engraving of company building; stock certificates, 1900-1940s; a stock register, 1947-1949; machinery specifications; general journal sheets,1954-1957; and depreciation schedules,1905-1948. Also includes hundreds of glass plate negatives, drawings and blueprints of New England Butt Co. machinery and parts, as well as several display images of braiders and knitters. Collection also contains records for the Wanskuck Co., a woolen and worsted manufacturer, including tax returns, 1940s; ledgers, journals, cash books, payroll and purchasing records, and a sales book (1930s-1950s). Wanskuck was incorporated in 1863 to manufacture woolen uniforms and blankets for the Civil War and gradually added the Steere Worsted Mill, the Mohegan Mill, the Geneva Mill and others to its holdings. The company was run largely by the Metcalf family for most of its history. In 1955, Wanskuck merged with the New England Butt Company, then owned by the Chace family, and New England Butt became a division of Wanskuck. At the same time, the Metcalfs sold their interest in Wanskuck to the Chace family who closed down textile operations in 1957 and diversified. The Chace's operated their conglomerate under the name Wanskuck until 1982 when it reorganized as Mossberg Industries, Inc. Also contains records of the Oakland Worsted Co., Oakland, R.I. This company, established and incorporated in 1852, was merged with the Wanskuck Co. in 1952; its mill was closed in 1957. Records include annual corporate reports to the state of R.I., 1932-1952; tax returns, 1920s-1950s; assets and liabilities,1929, as well as ledgers, journals, cash books, payroll, purchase and sales records, 1920s-1950s. Also contains some records of the Merrimack Manufacturing Co., Lowell, Mass. Records include audit reports, 1947-1957; financial statements, 1953-1955; an interim inventory valuation, 1956; mortgage and insurance records, 1952-1959, as well as various ledgers, journals, cash disbursements and receipts; expense sheets, accounts receivable, cost journal, etc. (1940s-1965). Merrimack shut down operations in 1958. It is not clear if Wanskuck owned Merrimack at some point or had some other financial arrangement with the mill. Collection also includes various financial records from the 1950s for Metcalf Bros. & Co., selling agent for the Wanskuck and Oakland mills, as well as records for Burrillville Realty Co., Burrillville, R.I. from the 1930s through the 1950s. The realty company seems to have had dealings with Oakland mill property.
